Description

An American investigates a murder amid the secrecy and corruption of China in this crime thriller from the New York Times–bestselling author of Razor Girl.

Art history professor Tom Stratton hasn't seen his former mentor David Wang for years—until they unexpectedly run into each other while Stratton is on a guided tour of China. But the reunion doesn't last long. After Wang is found dead—and the American embassy fumbles the investigation—Stratton sets out to solve the mystery of the killing on his own.

Before long, he's tangled in a web of corruption that reaches the highest seats of power. Beset by the suffocating secrecy and subterfuge of communist China, Stratton must find his friend's murderer—before the fury of a brutal conspiracy closes in on him.

Along with Powder Burn and Trap Line, this international mystery is one of the early suspense thrillers written by Carl Hiaasen and Bill Montalbano, a writing team praised for their "fine flair for characters and settings" (Library Journal).

By Chicken I miss you. Come back.
This is different than Hiaason's other work, but certainly keeps you on the edge. I recommend this book without reservation.
  • Not a typical Hiaasen book

This was written in 1984, apparently a joint effort. While not as irreverent and Floridian as Mr. Hiassen's more recent work, it is a good story (a proverbial page-turner), and well worth the reader's time!

Not what I was expecting after reading many of Hiaasen's Florida-focused books, but turned out to be an enjoyable read.

If this was the first Hiaasen book I'd ever read I wouldn't pick up another one. This was so bad I wanted the toss it across the room before I was into the 5th chapter. Not possible since it is in my iPad. What a bunch of blather. The plot was a good idea but it was subsumed beneath a pile of smarmy cliched overworkes phrasing and pointless side stories. All I can say after slogging through it it "Booo! Boooo!"

Carl, I have thoroughly enjoyed every book YOU wrote. Thanks, but this is awful, and an embarassment. Why would you ruin your reputation for such a pethetic attempt at a novel? Shame on you.

I don't know what possesses a writer to allow someone else to write a book then climb on the real author's reputation. Money, I guess. At least others have done it with a collaborator with a similar style. I bought this book because I have enjoyed Carl's past books immensely, and I thought this one would contain elements of his style and humor. Instead, it reads like some high school attempt. It is just awful. Carl, you should be ashamed. Some people have integrity, some just want to make a little scratch. I can understand that, but this one taught me a lesson.
