Alexandre Nicolas est né le 6 juin 1917 à Saïda en Algérie. Pour cet enfant d'un petit village des Hauts Plateaux de l'Algérie, l'armée est une promotion dont il est fier. Comme celle de l'Education nationale qui le fait instituteur en 1937. C'est son histoire qu'il raconte ici : lieutenant pendant la guerre, instituteur jusqu'au bout, il deviendra en 1962, à Sidi-Bel-Abbès, directeur de l'Office culturel français, puis s'installera en 1964 à Aix-en-Provence, ville d'où était parti son père en 1912 pour Saïda.
