SASHA
Five years ago, a boy on a borrowed motorcycle promised to come back for me before the first snow.
He never came.
Now my father has sold me to Chicago. My fiancé is the kindest man in the Zorovsky family. He weeps in church. He calls me his angel. He's old enough to be my father, and on Red Hill Sunday I'll stand in front of God and the whole Moscow Council and become his wife.
He's hired someone to keep me safe until the wedding.
His nephew.
The boy with the motorcycle. Grown up now, with a gun under his jacket, a scar on his lip, and a question in his eyes he refuses to ask.
They say he killed his own father on the steps of St. Sophia's.
They say he did it for me.
ARTUR
The night my father died, a dead number lit up my phone.
Meet me at St. Sophia's. Please.
I ran. I got there in time to hold him while he bled out on the fourth step, with a gun in my hand that wasn't mine and a flash going off in the dark above me.
For forty days I didn't say her name.
Then my uncle introduced me to his bride.
The girl I left in Moscow. The girl who might have sent me to those steps.
My job is to guard her until the wedding. Keep her safe. Keep her close. Keep my hands off her.
I've never been good at doing what I'm told.
I'll burn this family to the ground before I watch another man put a crown on her head.
