Cheap farm labour isn’t easy to come by, especially during a cold January of heavy rain, clinging mud, and backbreaking toil in Cornwall’s daffodil fields. Someone is trafficking people to work like peasants, housing in them in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. But when you’re desperate, choice isn’t a word that’s spoken. With no passport, little English, and less hope, where do you turn to for help? With two unclaimed bodies cooling in a Cornish morgue, Detective Inspector Rob Rego needs to find the organised crime gangs who are profiting from people’s lives – and stop them. He also needs someone who knows and understands the rural communities and remote farms, someone who can get the closed-mouthed locals to talk to him. Police Constable Tamsyn Poldhu might just be the woman for the job.
