Description

Rustic old Riddlesdale Lodge was a Wimsey family retreat filled with country pleasures and the thrill of the hunt -- until the game turned up human and quite dead. He lay among the chrysanthemums, wore slippers and a dinner jacket and was Lord Peter's brother-in-law-to-be. His accused murderer was Wimsey's own brother, and if murder set all in the family wasn't enough to boggle the unflappable Lord Wimsey, perhaps a few twists of fate would be -- a mysterious vanishing midnight letter from Egypt...a grieving fiancee with suitcase in hand...and a bullet destined for one very special Wimsey.

I love Lord Peter Wimsey, he has an incredible sense of wrong and right, of honor and love of family. He finds that his brother has been accused of murder and jailed. Lord Peter drops everything and rushes to investigate. His brother refuses to talk,so he does it his way. This is a true British mystery which I love.
  • Great Mystery with Interesting Characters

I enjoyed the first book in the series, but this second book is far and above the better of the two. Clouds of Witness focuses relentlessly on solving the murder, and it kept me guessing until the end. As usual, I enjoyed Sayers characters, and am interested to see if a relationship develops between Charles Parker and Lady Mary Wimsey. Parker is certainly smitten with her! Lord Peter is his usual genius self - I love reading how his mind works! A great mystery, wonderful characters of depth and a satisfying ending. What more can you ask? I’m moving on to the third book in the series!

This may be my favorite of the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries I’ve read so far. Of course, the series lives and dies by the reader’s appreciation of the character of Wimsey (and other regulars like the servant, Bunter; his pal from Scotland yard, Charles Parker; and his mother, the Dowager Duchess). Maybe that’s one of the things that makes this novel special: the man in the dock is Wimsey’s older brother, the Duke, so we get a real dive into his family, its history, and the strange goings-on of the upper classes.

Still, it must be said, the mystery here is a bit of a treat. There are so many witnesses to what has happened, the apparent murder of Wimsey’s sister’s fiancé, that the truth takes time to unravel. And everyone is so blinded by what they think they know and, sometime, what they have to hide, that Wimsey is misled at every turn. In the end, however, he resolves it to, if not everyone’s satisfaction, then certainly to the reader’s.
