En 1899, Georges Eekhoud, Belge flamand publie en français son roman Escal-Vigor, faisant scandale en tant que premier roman en littérature française belge à traiter ouvertement l'homosexualité.
Le roman, publié au Mercure de France, est poursuivi. Plusieurs écrivains de renom prennent position en faveur de l'auteur. Un procès à huis-clos a lieu, qui se termine par l'acquittement de Georges Eekhoud.
Le titre est le nom du château du comte, il fait allusion aux voyages des marins ("escale") et à la puissance masculine ("vigueur"). C'est aussi une anagramme presque parfaite d'Oscar Wilde.
