Description

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Sandwich is joy in book form. I laughed continuously, except for the parts that made me cry. Catherine Newman does a miraculous job reminding us of all the wonder there is to be found in life."—Ann Patchett, New York Times bestselling author of Tom Lake

“If you like my novels, you will love love love this . . . . I stand in awe, it’s just perfect.”—Elin Hilderbrand, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Swan Song

“A total delight.”—Kate Christensen

From the beloved author of We All Want Impossible Things and Wreck, a moving, hilarious story of a family summer vacation full of secrets, lunch, and learning to let go.

For the past two decades, Rocky has looked forward to her family’s yearly escape to Cape Cod. Their humble beach-town rental has been the site of sweet memories, sunny days, great meals, and messes of all kinds: emotional, marital, and—thanks to the cottage’s ancient plumbing—septic too.

This year’s vacation, with Rocky sandwiched between her half-grown kids and fully aging parents, promises to be just as delightful as summers past—except, perhaps, for Rocky’s hormonal bouts of rage and melancholy. (Hello, menopause!) Her body is changing—her life is, too. And then a chain of events sends Rocky into the past, reliving both the tenderness and sorrow of a handful of long-ago summers.

It's one precious week: everything is in balance; everything is in flux. And when Rocky comes face to face with her family’s history and future, she is forced to accept that she can no longer hide her secrets from the people she loves.

Best book I’ve read in years. Half poetry half prose. Hundred percent delight!

    Boring. Couldn’t finish it

I just finished this wonderful read with a tear and a sigh. This book is funny, heart wrenching, beautiful and sweet. It captures the spectrum of emotions that are life and family and tradition.
  • A Mother I strive NOT to be

Didn’t like it. I’m just so sad for the little unborn baby she chose to kill without even telling her husband. Those messed up kids of hers could have had another messed up sibling. That poor Mother really needs some more therapy. And that husband doesn’t have a backbone. Just sad.

Such an unlikeable narrator. And PC in an over-the-top way.
  • I could have written this book, she sounds so much like me!

I laughed and laughed and laughed some more. And all the while I asked myself how did this writer know me so well? Such a perfect simple beach read with a cast of very likeable people and a very likable cat.

I struggled getting through this book. Rocky, the narrator/protagonist, was too whiny and ungrateful to empathize with.

Very vulgar. Couldn’t get past the first couple of chapters.

I liked the book-it was an easy read BUT maybe it should come with a trigger warning—abortion, miscarriage, lbgt are major in major parts of the story line. I particularly enjoyed the memoirs of motherhood shared with the reader! I found many parts relatable as I watch my own children grow. Also, thanks for the warning of vaginal atrophy—had no idea that was a thing as I approach perimenopause 🫣🫣
  • Depressing empty nester story

Writing was awkward. Story Wasn’t terrible but wasn’t great. Being a newbie empty nester myself, I found this book to be more depressing than actually being an empty nester.
