Doch seine Befehlsschrift zum Aufstand gegen Taira erreichte auch Yoritomo in der Provinz Izu. Ehrfürchtig nahm Yoritomo den Aufruf Mochihitos an und rief sofort die ehemaligen Stammesangehörigen Minamotos im Osten zur Mobilmachung gegen Taira auf. Der Genpei-Krieg begann. Was aber konnten Yoritomo und Masakos Vater Tokimasa Hojo mit ihrer kleinen Truppe von nur einhundert Mann schon ausrichten? Yoritomos Aufstand erlitt eine vernichtende Niederlage auf dem Berg Ishibashiyama. Doch die Zeit rief nach einem Erneuerer und ließ Yoritomo am Leben.
