Good read— very real, close-up view of the Holocaust, which was of course difficult to read. Great characterizations as always. Apple Books app forced me to miss a good chunk of the beginning of the story, and didn’t respond to my notification, so I’m disappointed in that. But the story itself, or what I read of it, was excellent. She always includes a moral element to consider, so reading her work is thought-provoking.

I gave this 5 stars because the writing style was beautiful and really brought me in and described the settings and characters at the concentration camps so vividly. I do agree that it starts out slow. Sage’s character develops slowly, and I’m not sure I understood the significance of her scar and the accident we learn about towards the beginning of the book. I think that could have been better wrapped up or discussed at the end. The author leaves the ending very open so it’s a great book for book club. So much to discuss and digest and I’m sure people will have very different feelings and views. I think I feel them all. It’s also five stars because I want more. I want to understand even more about the non-Jew, German mentality during the war and the SS officers. I thought the parallel vampire/monster story was incredibly unique, creative and very well done.

Loved this book. It keeps your attention. The subject matter can make your skin crawl but at the same time it is a part of history that should not be forgotten. There are still those who would wish to eradicate a part of earth’s population and this book demonstrates the ease of putting this into practice.

Survivors of Auschwitz’s horrorors and the dreadful March fromAushwitz to Bergen-Belson…one in particular Magda Hershberger who lectured about her experience at many university’s until her death 2 years ago.
As an artist I traveled back to the shtetl of David Horodok and documented some of the remains of that small village ,the killing fields and forests where the Jews were murdered.
I also documented the death camp of. Madanek
This was in 1998
The cemetery memorial has been destroyed and redone at least 3 times since then because of willful desecration

I absolutely loved this book! It was hard to put down. Of all of Jodi’s books this is my favorite. The historical fiction and detail make you long for more information. She constantly have you on your toes asking for more.
