Description

In his definitive introduction to Zen Buddhism, Alan Watts ("the perfect guide for a course correction in life" —Deepak Chopra), explains the principles and practices of this ancient religion.

With a rare combination of freshness and lucidity, he delves into the origins and history of Zen to explain what it means for the world today with incredible clarity. Watts saw Zen as “one of the most precious gifts of Asia to the world,” and in The Way of Zen he gives this gift to readers everywhere.

“Perhaps the foremost interpreter of Eastern disciplines for the contemporary West, Watts had the rare gift of ‘writing beautifully the unwritable.’” —Los Angeles Times

Reviews

  • Great summary of zen. The history portion is exhausting.

This gives a deeper understanding of the roots of Tao, Zen, and Buddhism with a unique overview of the core themes in terms a westerner can grasp. I would advise skimming the deeper history portions to get to the meat in the last portion. There were good nuggets in there but it is a bit tedious at times.
  • Brilliant and educational

An excellent introduction to a difficult subject: Zen Buddhism. Watts is smart, knowledgeable and a very good writer. He speaks not just as a scholar, from the outside looking in. He speaks as one who knows what these inscrutable writings are trying to point to. Highly recommended.
