Description

From the hip-hop icon, Hollywood star, and “a true artist and writer of deep talent” (James McBride, author of The Color of Water)—a candid, New York Times bestselling memoir ranging from his childhood on Chicago’s South Side and his emergence as one of rap’s biggest names.

Common has earned a reputation in the hip-hop world as a conscious artist by embracing themes of love and struggle in his songs. His journey toward understanding is rooted in his relationship with a remarkable woman, his mother.

Common holds nothing back in this gripping memoir, both provocative and funny. He tells what it was like for a boy with big dreams growing up on the South Side of Chicago. He reveals how he almost quit rapping after his first album sold only two thousand copies. He recounts his rise to stardom and talks about the challenges of balancing fame, love, and family. Through it all, Common emerges as a man in full. Rapper. Actor. Activist. But also father, son, and friend. His story offers a living example of how, no matter what you’ve gone through, one day it’ll all make sense.

This book is truly one of common's greatest works. The insight he gives on all of his experiences makes you feel as if you are right there with him. That is a gift that very few writers have.

This book did exactly as the author described, showed a person on there journey in it entirety and its not complete at this time . To see and hear someone as a person in a new way that you have seen and heard before awesome.

Sometimes in life you have to surrender yourself to a higher calling. Often it's a painful process. Rashid shares a candid view of his self as process, struggles, successes, loves and losses with grace in One Day. He exhibits a readiness for spiritual, physical and emotional expansion that is sexy in word. His relationships run deep and are presented as a critical component to his stardom which is a priceless and refreshing perspective. Not only does he tell his story, he shares a real perspective complete with grit and intelligent reflection. I recommend this book as a coming of age tale. If you are a contemporary of his like I am, he will make you remember those parallel dots you must look back on and connect for yourself. I learned a great deal about myself through the vivid accounts from both him and his mother. It was a shared story for all three of us. Bravo.

This book is a wonderful insight into a poetic mind. It provokes introspection and provides great encouragement to be who you are and all that you can be! A magnificent read I was sorry it had to end. Anyone with a dream, anyone who loves hip hop culture, anyone who struggles with being themselves and being successful, anyone and everyone should read this book.

Going back to the Can I Borrow a Dollar? days I've been a fan and nothing he does (outside of Electric Circus) surprises me. This book is no exception. Well written, inspirational and insightful. He let us get a glimpse of his private life while keeping it trill and not trashy. Recommended highly.

Interesting insight into the life of one my favorite MCs. I really could relate to many of the themes relating to maturity, fatherhood and relationships. Less of Mom would have improved the book.

This was a great read from start to finish. I think this book should get more spotlight. Something our youth should be taking heed to.

I have always been a Common fan but this book has definitely expanded my appreciation for him & his mom. The letter his mom wrote to him about being a man needs to be read by every male. Thank you for your honesty!
