Description

An Apple Books Classic edition.

Buoyant in its optimism and yet scathing in its cultural criticism, Charles Dickens’ second novel is an electrifying journey into the dark corners of 19th-century London’s criminal underworld.

Orphaned Oliver Twist has been starved and beaten in a brutal workhouse for most of his young life. After running away to London, he falls under the control of Fagin, a criminal who trains young boys to pick pockets for him on the crowded streets.

But Oliver’s mysterious birth makes him the target of a ruthless plot, and when he escapes the desperate Fagin’s clutches, danger follows him at every turn. Oliver Twist blends unforgettable characters alongside Dickens’ anger at a society that discards its most vulnerable.

Poor Oliver

By shajeehhh
Oliver’s sad predicament is beautifully portrayed with such pathos that would make reader hug the poor boy if he could somehow be manifested out of the pages by some divine hand. It marvelously portrays the plight of orphans and preaches kindness to destitute children and how poor status doesn’t equate to moral wickedness by default.
Amazing wonderful book

How somebody could call this book boring I don’t know. It’s beautiful, thrilling, and whatever fool says it’s boring and a waste of time I don’t know. If I could chose one book in the whole world to save, I’d chose this one, and not miss any other one.
Excellent Story!

A much better read than the story told in the movie! Dickens is the same wordy guy as always, but the clever twists of the story are worth wading through. I’d love to see a modern movie of this book made!
I LIKED IT.....KINDA

The beginning was delicious, amazing story, great time and place, and you can learn a lot, but the ending was very bland, it didn’t have much context
Oliver Twist forever!

A bit confusing at the language and time , as it being from a different tone period, but the end is satisfying!!!
Very great story

Similar to Huckleberry Finn, Oliver Twist has great plot and characters all portraying the various classes and people of the time. Dickens does a very great job expressing the themes of poverty, nature v. Nurture, and portrayal of emotions from grief to affection. Definitely recommend to anyone. It’s a definite classic!
