Description

In this political memoir, one of today’s most admired and controversial political figures, Ayaan Hirsi Ali burst into international headlines following the murder of Theo van Gogh by an Islamist who threatened that she would be next. She made headlines again when she was stripped of her citizenship and resigned from the Dutch Parliament.

Infidel shows the coming of age of this distinguished political superstar and champion of free speech as well as the development of her beliefs, iron will, and extraordinary determination to fight injustice. Raised in a strict Muslim family, Hirsi Ali survived civil war, female mutilation, brutal beatings, adolescence as a devout believer during the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood, and life in four troubled, unstable countries ruled largely by despots. She escaped from a forced marriage and sought asylum in the Netherlands, where she earned a college degree in political science, tried to help her tragically depressed sister adjust to the West, and fought for the rights of Muslim women and the reform of Islam as a member of Parliament. Under constant threat, demonized by reactionary Islamists and politicians, disowned by her father, and expelled from family and clan, she refuses to be silenced.

Ultimately a celebration of triumph over adversity, Hirsi Ali’s story tells how a bright little girl evolves out of dutiful obedience to become an outspoken, pioneering women’s rights advocate. As Western governments struggle to balance democratic ideals with religious pressures, no other book could be more timely or more significant.

Ignore the anonymous442123 review about this book. They don’t know what they are talking about and likely are a regressive leftist that tolerates a religion that still lives in the 7th century under oh that’s there culture don’t criticize. This is a good book about her story, detailing her early life as well as about having to deal with a forced marriage among other horrific practices that still exist in Islamic countries. She even faced death threats for working on a movie with Theo Van Gogh (rest in peace) about Islam’s awful treatment of women. Definitely check this book out interesting and thought provoking and avoid those who offended because they are unable to hear the brutal honesty’s regarding ideas/practices of a fundamentalist religion. Nothing should be off limits for criticism mockery ridicule etc not even religions/religious people anything like that.

A must read for people of all faiths and backgrounds. Ayaan's personal journey will make you cry, laugh, cringe, and open your eyes to a part of the world people rarely speak of. Her writing is witty and concise. A highly recommended read to anyone interested in analysis of Islam and cultural integration policies in Europe.

I first heard of and saw her on the Bill Mayer show and it just so happened that I just finished the book "The Pirates of Somalia." Her interview went right along with my questioning attitude. I bought the book and was amazed at where she started and how far she went in life...inspirational indeed. I was ashamed at how most of the religions and their books are mostly geared towards men being in control, using their religion as an excuse, and treating woman like they themselves would not want to be treated, because the "men" that wrote these books said they could. I learned a lot about how different, cultures can be, compared to my own. Great book and a great read. Keep speaking on what's true and humanely right.

I couldn't put this book down. Many people are good, kind and loving in this world, but so few are courageous. Ayaan Hirsi Ali is one of the few.

I have the greatest admiration for this writer, whose journey took her from a culture that is very opposed to independent thinking (particularly among women) to a place where she was able to seek self-fulfillment , education and a highly regarded career--things that most of us take for granted. Although her youth was hard, she's anything but self-pitying. She always comes across as a generous and forgiving person. Truth is in this story.

The best and most important non-fiction book this century. I recommend it to everyone I know who reads and they in turn recommend it to others. Ali is one if the most intelligent and heroic people living today. Check out Nomad after you finish this.

A bit slow at the beginning but the pace picks up. Ayaan's personal, truthful journey should be read by everyone wanting to understand Islam as well as political tensions between the West and Muskim countries. Besides that this is a remarkable story about the human spirit.
  • A compelling story of courage

A motivational, yet compelling story of self determination and courage. I found it to be a little slow in the middle, but not unbearable. It's amazing to think the culture of her childhood still exists today.
