  • Great Philosophy, Mediocre Characters

    When viewed through the lens of social, political, and environmental philosophy the Dune series is a triumph, but its characters are a disappointment. There is not a single moment anywhere in the first three books of a female character making her own decisions for herself. Women in Herbert’s world do things at the bidding of their menfolk and Herbert calls this love. The male characters have thoughts and autonomy, but even they spend most of their time musing on philosophical questions than anything else.

    Some fine philosophy wrapped around some severely mediocre characters.

  • Not as good as the first two

    It took me longer to finish this one compared to the first two books. It felt a little too slow at times and I didn’t like some characters. A major character death in the climax had me shook to the point that I almost cried though. The final 25% really picked up the pace and had me glued to the page until the very end

    While this installment brings a lot more creativity to the story, I feel as though some parts are drawn out, could have been the same length as the second and would have been way more compelling. This doesn’t take away from its grandeur, this book is very much everything you loved about the series and more!

    The final book in the story of Paul (as far as I know) and the beginning of a new chapter that opens up the universe of dune to endless possibilities. There was nothing in this book I didn’t enjoy and I’m excited to continue frank herberts journey.

    Personally, I find these books intriguing, but the character development often jumps, as opposed to gradual change. And sometimes it’s hard to link. I really I Very much enjoyed the read. But I did slow at some points.
