This book (and the series as a whole) is such a wonderful collage of the darkness that is inside human nature. Alwyn is never quite the hero of the story, nor do you ever fully expect him to be, which makes for such an interesting viewpoint.

Cannot recommend enough if you like a constant mental turmoil combined with subtle magic and combat that gives you goosebumps!

I started off disliking the author’s writing style, as it seemed a bit too eloquent. But the dislike quickly faded as I began to really enjoy the characters. He injects just enough humor to make it fun without detracting from the grimness required of this genre, kind of like Abercrombie does. Looking forward to the sequel.

Best book I’ve read in a long time. Kept me engaged the whole way through and I’m excited for the second book. Excellent story telling and descriptive writing. 11/10
