Robert Marteau est né en 1925, à Virollet de Villiers-en-Bois, dans la forêt de Chizé. Il vit actuellement en France, après douze années passées à Montréal. Les éditions du Seuil ont publié ses premiers ouvrages : Royaumes, Travaux sur la terre, Des chevaux parmi les arbres ; aux éditions Gallimard, ont paru : Pentecôte, Mont-Royal, Fleuve sans fin (Journal du Saint-Laurent).
