Breaking the Hedonic Treadmill

Intentionalism is what this book is really about. In fact, the whole minimalist movement is centered around intentionalism. At the heart of the intentionalism argument is a simple idea, question the status quo. The very act of asking “is this right for me,” will give us the space to eventually break free from the hedonic treadmill

The Minimalist did a wonderful job of framing the questions we should be asking in the form of relationships. Not just with people but with every key aspect of our lives. Each chapter serves as an honest assessment of how we all generally relate to said topic, why and how to question that relationship, and what the subsequent intentional re-engagement with that part of our life will mean for our well being.

This book has the benefit of many years of Ryan and Josh honing their minimalist message into this well distilled version. I’d say it is better than their other creations because it really gets down to the why of everything they have been sharing for years. I recommend even skipping straight to this book if you are new to Minimalism / Intentionalism. It could make the whole process of breaking free of the hedonic trappings of modern society easier. Ultimately, finding your true values and what adds meaning to your life.

This book is my favorite synthesis of Orwellian dystopia and emotional intelligence. Please take the time not only to read, but interact with this literature.

CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
I’m a minimalist at heart, so found LOVE PEOPLE, USE THINGS to be a fascinating read. The authors, who’ve had two Netflix documentaries on the subject, expand the concept through seven chapters that focus on Stuff, Truth, Self, Values, Money, Creativity, and People. Their ideas go way beyond just decluttering and living with less. It offers a holistic approach that applies to every aspect of life, and really made me think about whether I’m living a life true to my own values.

I was particularly struck by how much time I spend online — nearly 24 x 7 — as I review books and tend to social media. After reading LOVE PEOPLE, USE THINGS, I’ve vowed to change this. My online addiction goes against my most cherished values of putting loved ones first over activities. If I can change this, my life will improve significantly. Wow!

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to change their priorities and focus on what really matters.
