The dialogue is horrendously unrealistic. An example: After encountering an obviously violent religious fanatic who attempts to murder two people, one of the adult characters says (and I quote), “He can’t just kill people who do things he doesn’t like.”

The way three characters speak in this story is cartoonish and contrived, something straight out of a made-for-TV Hallmark movie. This is particularly frustrating because I felt strong empathy and emotional connection to Samantha (the primary protagonist). Her desperation and growing fortitude had me rooting for her the entire time, so it was frustrating to have three distracting people thrown into the mix. Honestly, this story would have been much better without the paranormal attributes. The drama of William and Samantha had my heart racing during certain scenes, especially since domestic abuse and child kidnappings are horrifying aspects of reality. Focusing on those alone would have made this a marvelous tale.

Overall, it was worth the price. For a much better wilderness-themed horror, however, I recommend “The Ritual” by Adam Nevill.
