Vathek. Un racconto arabo è un romanzo orientale (e piuttosto “gotico”), scritto dall’autore inglese William Beckford nel 1782 ma pubblicato la prima volta in lingua francese. Creata “di getto” in soli tre giorni, la vicenda è ambientata in una immaginaria città araba (Samarah). La storia è quella di un viaggio folle e fantastico all’inseguimento della ricchezza materiale ma a discapito della salvezza spirituale. La narrazione è pervasa da un sarcasmo cinico verso il protagonista, che appare ottuso e crudele.
