Château de Ferney, 1765, Voltaire reçoit son biographe. Lors d’entretiens, il raconte, des épisodes marquants de son parcours : enfance chez les Jésuites, premiers émois, découverte de l’écriture, désir d’ascension sociale, notoriété acquise par des pamphlets sulfureux, emprisonnement à la Bastille, exil en Angleterre, participation à l’Encyclopédie… Mais ce n’est pas parce qu’il évoque le passé qu’il en oublie d’être attentif à son temps, et particulièrement à l’affaire du chevalier de La Barre, un jeune homme exécuté pour crime contre le Christ et la foi pour avoir dégradé des symboles religieux. Scandalisé, Voltaire se battra pour réhabiliter sa mémoire et sauver les « complices » du chevalier en éveillant les consciences.
