Dès l'abord, il la dégoûte. Sitôt mariés, ils s'installent dans le lugubre manoir du Glandier. En janvier 1840, au terme d'une atroce agonie, Lafarge meurt. Dans sa chambre, partout, de l'arsenic. Tout désigne Marie comme la coupable. L'était-elle vraiment ? Elle est condamnée à Tulle aux travaux forcés à perpétuité, au terme d'un procès sensationnel. La France se divisa entre lafargistes et antilafargistes. L'histoire de Marie a fourni bien des traits à Madame Bovary.
