Description

A delightful, whimsical tale—one of the most popular books for cat lovers ever written.

May Sarton’s fictionalized account of her cat Tom Jones’s life and adventures prior to making the author’s acquaintance begins with a fiercely independent, nameless street cat who follows the ten commandments of the Gentleman Cat—including “A Gentleman Cat allows no constraint of his person, not even loving constraint.” But after several years of roaming, Tom has grown tired of his vagabond lifestyle, and he concludes that there might be some appeal after all in giving up the freedom of street life for a loving home. It will take just the right human companion, however, to make his transformation from Cat About Town to genuine Fur Person possible. Sarton’s book is one of the most beloved stories ever written about the joys and tribulations inherent in sharing one’s life with a cat.

I LOVED this book. My mother read it and told me about it many years ago, but I had never taken the time to read it. So now, my mom is gone and as I finally read this, I think about how I would like to tell her that I, too, found the Fur Person DELIGHTFUL! If you have ever tried to get into a beloved cat’s head, this story is for you.

I really wanted to love this book (and some of it was truly adorable) but I had mixed feelings in the end. If only the main human characters had given a little more sympathy, or kind words, or loving tenderness to the kitty. There were also a few tense situations that were unexpectedly stressful given the tone of the rest of the book.

Sarton’s empathy with and anthropomorphism toward cats produces a story that fun enough for kids and deep enough for adults (or vice versa?). A favored tale I return too and remember there is still a lot of good in the world.

I may never be able to look at my own Fur Persons in the same way now that I've gotten this insight. This is such a delightful read -- calling all Cat-lovers, you will love this tender and amusing, but too-short journey with Tom Jones, Gentleman Cat.
