An excellent read of a man and his various partners in building an interpersonal and sustainable healthcare system for the world’s poorest citizens. Paul Farmer reminds me of a doctor friend from Northern California who left his practice to treat Batwa pygmies in southwestern Uganda. Dr. Scott Kellermann inspired me to make my first trips to Africa and Uganda where I spent the better part of seven years building relationships. Truly, men and women who serve and treat others, including far-off neighbors, are worthy of our admiration.

RIP Paul Farmer. Rise in power, sir!

I have finished reading Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson in which he compares his search for humanity in the treatment of the wrongfully convicted persons on the death rows of America with the work of Dr. Farmer. He says Farmer showed him the importance of embracing our brokenness and the compassion that remains our best hope for healing. We are afraid and angry and so we throw away children and imprisonments the sick and weak. Stephenson is the Paul Farmer of criminal defense of the unjustly imprisoned.

An eye-opener

Never have I ever read a book that made me want to go out there and do something. I'm from Haiti and this book Inspired me to branch out to not only my countries but to places around the world that need a helping hand. Paul Farmer did not have to do the things that he did but he chose to because he cared about the people's well-being and for that I think that he is an extraordinary person. Never did he complain and he was willing to travel back and forth to make sure that the people out there were getting the right treatment. This book started out just as a summer reading book but it opened my eyes to see that there are things to be improved out there and I don't need to wait for someone to get to it. I can do it myself. Thank You Tracy Kidder.

This story, told through the eyes of Tracy Kidder drove me through my undergrads studies and continues to be the motivating for behind my graduate studies in medicine. In a time where I still have no health insurance despite having a full time job, I escape to this book and strive to employ Dr.Farmers ideals in my own life.
