Description

THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING PHENOMENON

A Katie Couric Book Club Pick • A Jen Hatmaker Book Club Pick

“[A] word-of-mouth smash hit.” The New York Times

“A treasure.” —Hoda Kotb

One spring morning, a stranger named Theo arrives in the small Southern city of Golden. He doesn't explain much about where he came from or why he's there—but when he visits the local coffeehouse, where pencil portraits of the people of Golden hang on the walls, he begins purchasing them, one at a time, and giving each portrait to the person depicted. In exchange, he asks only for the person's story. And so portrait by portrait, person by person, secrets are revealed, regrets are shared, and ordinary lives are profoundly altered.

A story of giving and receiving, of seeing and being seen, Theo of Golden is an unforgettable novel about the power of generosity, the importance of connection, and the quiet miracles that happen when we choose kindness and wonder.

  • I love everything about this book.

Sometimes I had to put it down to smile, think or cry. I love the beauty in the nature, art, music, coffee and relationships. I made my heart happy and I have already purchased a hard cover copy to read over and over again. Next time more slowly.
  • A tale of unconditional love shown in the most beautiful yet unconventional way.

This book starts off slow and remains slow throughout its entirety. It is unclear and often very frustrating why the author chooses to go off in countless, seemingly, unrelated and boring tangents. Yet as the story continues the threads are eventually intertwined into a strong rope that pulls the reader forward to a very satisfying, yet unexpected ending. One can’t help but think of Fredrik Backman’s “My Friends” combined with the charm and symphony of a small Southern town.
  • So beautiful, so powerful, had me in tears often

It’s so easy to see why this book is a best-seller, aside from the fact that the author is in his 60s, it’s his first book, brilliant about life, let alone having crafted a powerful interwoven story about how precious and rare is human connection. A tiny quibble: the middle is rather long (the book is over 100K words!) - but then a lot of first-time novelists have that issue. But he brings it all in, in ways you will not expect, twists you can’t imagine. All in all, a poignant enthralling story that I would read again.

A light-hearted read that was somewhat hackneyed at times. Yet, the end was completely unpredictable eye opening and the story tied together beautifully. One might say “My heart burned within me”
  • A must read

It was a delightful book. I need to go back and review the cast of characters. Willa is a name at the end that took me by surprise. I would love to read any other books that Allen Levi writes.

This was his first novel. I don’t know how he could do a second one that is just as good but since I’m on his email, I’m sure if there’s another book in the works, I will be aware of it.
  • A little bit of Heaven on earth

It pulls beauty and love together whenever a kindness is given. It is a book you can’t wait to finish, but you will miss how it touches your life.
  • This is a special book, a story so deep and lovingly told I grieved as it ended.

This lovely novel about a kind, reclusive stranger filled me with the desire to be a kinder version of myself. Theo touched every life he encountered, with each recipient of his presence (and presents) fully responsible for their own reactions. What do we do with the opportunities to be our best selves? It’s a worthy question, one to be pondered every day.
