When Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he runs away until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck has faked his own death to escape his violent father. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Brimming with the electrifying humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a literary icon, this brilliant and tender novel radically illuminates Jim’s agency, intelligence, and compassion as never before. James is destined to be a major publishing event and a cornerstone of twenty-first century American literature.

From the first page I couldn’t put the book down and didn’t want it to end. The compelling story of the runaway slave Jim and the boy Huck is a powerful book of survival and discovery of what strengths lie within us against all odds and hope. I highly recommend this book!

Phenomenal! Thought-provoking! Witty! Just! What a story, what a story-teller. What a writer, author, character, narrarator! All lines blurred…intentionally.

Fascinating viewpoint on slavery. So many perspectives with some trying to justify it.

A “true” story of humanity, family and survival. It inverts fables and fantasies to uncover the known world in all its complexity and glory.
  • Powerful.

For the black, who have nothing, who can own nothing, who are nothing to society, this book raises its voice, grabs hold of the pencil and writes the story of James. It is so jarring to read through this first person POV, knowing that this is America’s history. That this fiction was an autobiography for others. A mind blowing story, an ultimate page turner.

  • Just the read we need…

This important novel reminds us the evil of slavery - especially in this day and age where there is a great attempt to rewrite this history in the US. It reads like Voltaire's Candide, a series of adventures and coincidentes, which is referenced by the protagonist. The book, James, touches on many of the common problems we see in our current society including the hypocritical morality of some pious religions and the problems with a society caused by blatant injustice.
