    This is one of those books you finish, waiting for something to happen. It just never really gets to anything nor did I care too much about anyone. Still, the writing is decent and I’ll continue the series. Just kind of meh when it really could have been better.

    This is a medieval adventure pretending to be science fiction. The sci-fi trappings add nothing to the tired story.

    The writing style is disrespectful of the reader. Five lines of dialogue will be stretch across 10 pages with the addition of multiple paragraphs of extraneous descriptive text.

  • NOTW + Dune

    You can definitely see the pieces being pulled from Name of the Wind and Dune (maybe a little Blood Song), but it really comes into its own. I’ve been a bit stale on fantasy and sci-fi recently, but this book really captured the grand style and beautifully written prose that I’ve really only gotten in books like Name of the Wind and Farseer. Some people seem to think its too slowly paced, and I couldn’t disagree more. I love that the space opera epic sci fi stuff comes hand in hand with a very personal and emotional beginning of a story. I enjoyed it immensely and couldn’t recommend it more!!

    Ruocchio’s writing style tends towards the arcane, but without being tedious. The plot moves right along, and so it’s a great read!
    I haven’t read for pleasure for quite a while, and chose this book on a friend’s recommendation. It was a very good choice, and I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series!
    I recommend this book!

    Grabs you pretty quickly. The author really gets his stride after the first few chapters, and it becomes a page-turner.

    Love the voice and point of view, and skillful juxtaposition of internal and external dialogue.

    The naivety and entitlement of the protagonist makes me not like him and unsympathetic towards him. He is also a hopeless romantic. The book don’t get good until the last 3rd of it.

    After finishing Sun Eater (so far) I can certainly say that the first and second books are easily the weakest in the series. They aren’t bad by any metric but compared to everything after it’s not even close. I’d still give them 5 stars because they are critical to understanding Hadrians character but just know that if you read sun eater the books only get better, if you kinda like the first one you should like the second a little more, until the third has you in a vice grip and won’t let go.

    It was a wonderful book!! I have no complaints, but high praises all around! Ruocchio wears his influences on his sleeve, but in a positive way! I believe, if you enjoyed dune, Lord of the Rings, Red Rising, and Kingkiller Chronicles, you’ll enjoy this! I’ve only just finished the first book and it’s already one of my favorite series so far! Can’t wait to jump into the next book!!
