  • Spy Novel, or Political Propaganda ?

    I first read Silva’s later novels, and then decided to read the earlier ones, like this one. Silva definitely views his writing as a platform for political expression. In the later novels, Silva conveys a sense of shared responsibility for the Israeli/Arab conflict; not equally, of course, but suggesting that Israeli policies have worsened – not improved – the situation. And I find it interesting that in these earlier novels he portrays Israel as 100% blameless. Is this because the policies of the Israeli government were vastly different between the time of the early and later novels’ writings ?
    If you are looking for a spy novel, know that you’re going to get a whole lot of political propaganda when reading Silva - it’s not subtle. But he is a gifted and well-researched writer, even if he’s only a so-so crusader.

    I normally don’t write reviews, I just leave star ratings, but I was compelled to do so because of a review that popped up when I was reading the plot for this book. The reader gave it one star and said the book lacked the excitement of the previous books in this series. I quite disagree. It had its exciting moments and expected cliffhangers, but there were also many Machiavellian moments where you seriously get into the head of many of the players, as well as learn a little history. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of five is that it was much shorter than most. Still, the pages pack quite a punch and deliver all you could ask of a Daniel Silva Gabriel Allon novel with the exception of length. I have read all the novels as they came out but this time I’ve starting at the beginning and am reading them all back to back.

    A good pot boiler , not great. The locals and background kept it interesting but the characters didn't spring to life. There were hints to a richer backstory but not truly developed.

    Yes, I know it is fiction. But it is excellent Jewish fiction. I pray Daniel comes to know personally the God so casually dismissed by Gabriel. This is a superb book.

    This is my first Silva book. As a lot of the good thrillers, a little hard to follow at times. I loved the history and connection to the current political climate.
    Looking forward to another Silva book.

    It appears this one was rushed, i did not enjoy it as much as i anticipated.
    the plot and sequence of events is OK, the bias is obvious, and was dissappointed after ready 2/3 of the book, i knew that the thrilling ends we're used to will not be part of this book.

    Fallen Angel is typical Silva. If you liked his last several novels you will like this one as well. The climax is a little abrupt and short-lived, but per Silva's style, trends towards being more realistic than "Hollywood." Great historical context within the setting of the finale. Good read.
