Description

A NEW YORK TIMES AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER!

"I've loved every one of Susanna's books! She has bedrock research and a butterfly's delicate touch with characters—sure recipe for historical fiction that sucks you in and won't let go!"—DIANA GABALDON, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Outlander

A hauntingly beautiful tale of love that transcends time: an American writer travels to Scotland to craft a novel about the Jacobite Rebellion, only to discover her own ancestral memories of that torrid moment in Scottish history...

In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown. When young Sophia Paterson travels to Slains Castle by the sea, she finds herself in the midst of the dangerous intrigue.

Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next bestselling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of that historic Scottish castle, she starts to write. But when she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction, Carrie wonders if she might be the only living person who knows the truth—the ultimate betrayal—that happened all those years ago.

A sweeping historical fantasy of love, danger, and time travel, Susanna Kearsley masterfully weaves Scotland's past into Carrie's present in this stunning book.

This book is hard to put down. I loved the way it is constructed, moving back and forth between the past and present. The characters are well drawn and their conversations well crafted. Most enjoyable!

I almost gave up trudging through the beginning of the book, however once it got going it was hard to put down. I found myself thinking of Scotland and the characters throughout my day and couldn’t wait to read again before bed. It certainly made me want to book my own trip to see Slains and stay in a coastal cottage.

What an incredible read! I could not put it down even tho I HAD to take my time! The history lesson was awesome! But the best was the story from the woman about her descendants! I can’t wait to continue reading her books.

Not one to write a review but this book takes you into a world that seamlessly holds you from one century to another and makes you comfortable in each. As much as I think technology has made us into zombies within our own world, there's nothing better than downloading a brilliant book at midnight and reading until dawn.

I really was disappointed in this book. The male characters were cartoon characters and the heroine never engaged me. It read like one of my mother's grade B romance novels. If you like Outlander... And the only reason I mention that book in the context of this one is, that as I was searching for a way to write this review I saw another poster mention it, this book will bore you to death. I wrote the review because this is the first time in my life I have ever wanted to take a book back and demand a refund. Many of the fantastical elements are glossed over, none of the "real" elements feels real. I want my money back... And my investment of time.
