I read Solito with my heart in my throat and did not burst into tears until the last sentence. What a person, what a writer, what a book.—Emma Straub

“A riveting tale of perseverance and the lengths humans will go to help each other in times of struggle.”—Dave Eggers

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Times Book Review, NPR, The Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, Vulture, She Reads, Kirkus Reviews

Trip. My parents started using that word about a year ago—“one day, you’ll take a trip to be with us. Like an adventure.”

Javier Zamora’s adventure is a three-thousand-mile journey from his small town in El Salvador, through Guatemala and Mexico, and across the U.S. border. He will leave behind his beloved aunt and grandparents to reunite with a mother who left four years ago and a father he barely remembers. Traveling alone amid a group of strangers and a “coyote” hired to lead them to safety, Javier expects his trip to last two short weeks.

At nine years old, all Javier can imagine is rushing into his parents’ arms, snuggling in bed between them, and living under the same roof again. He cannot foresee the perilous boat trips, relentless desert treks, pointed guns, arrests and deceptions that await him; nor can he know that those two weeks will expand into two life-altering months alongside fellow migrants who will come to encircle him like an unexpected family.

A memoir as gripping as it is moving, Solito provides an immediate and intimate account not only of a treacherous and near-impossible journey, but also of the miraculous kindness and love delivered at the most unexpected moments. Solito is Javier Zamora’s story, but it’s also the story of millions of others who had no choice but to leave home.

This book is so beautifully written. He does such a magnificent job of drawing you into his harrowing account, so filled with detail, it’s as if you’re experiencing it yourself!

The book was awash with imagery and vivid descriptions of the danger and harsh reality of trying to cross into the US as an illegal alien. I can’t say “ I enjoyed “ the book.. because it was gut wrenching at times and dreadfully sad in other chapters. I hope the author has reunited with the 3 people who meant so much to him as a 9 year old child alone and frightened.

Wish I could’ve enjoyed the book but it jumps from page 60 to 97. I’m lost almost 40 “pages” of backstory that are a mystery to me. Terrible. This needs to be fixed.

This book is a good read. It makes me have a different perspective on life. I can’t imagine being Javier’s age and traveling by myself with strangers all the way to the US. This little boy had so much hope for himself and others. The way he cared for his second family is heart warming. I recommend this book!

As my mother and father both passed the boarder to come give their three kids a better life, this was very eye opening. I was two when my parents crossed, so i never knew that their experience was as bad as they made it out to be. But reading this book and putting myself in Javier’s place opened my eyes to feel what my parents felt when they cross to come here. The ending was a beautiful ending and even amazing how many people reunite with family after being separated for so many years.

I haven’t cried this hard at the end of a book ever. His fake family who helped him through are incredible.
