Description

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an American classic, a book that has inspired troves of writers in its wake, and that has sparked generations of discussion and debate. It is a novel by Mark Twain noted for its depiction of people and locations along the Mississippi River. One of the first major American novels to employ vernacular English, Adventure of Huckleberry Finn offers a satire on Southern Antebelleum society, particularly regarding attitudes of racism. Told in the first person by protagonist Huckleberry Finn, the book is a direct sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. This Essential Classics edition includes a new introduction by Professor Vivian Heller, Ph.D. in literature and modern studies from Yale University.

Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in 1835. Raised in Missouri, Twain gained prominence for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the latter known as a Great American Novel.

Vivian Heller received her Ph.D. in English Literature and Modern Studies from Yale University. She is author of Joyce, Decadence, and Emancipation(University of Illinois Press) and of The City Beneath Us   (W.W. Norton & Company), a history of the building of the New York City subway system.  She is an associate at Columbia’s School of Professional Studies and is the writing tutor for the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. She is also a long-standing member of the non-fiction committee of the PEN Prison-Writing Committee, which awards prizes to inmates from across the country.

The novel is the great American novel, but the ending doesn’t work. You can’t understand American literature without Huck Finn. It’s worth a read, warts and all. It offers a window into American race relations that you cannot miss.

If you can ignore the horrible racist language and racial stereotypes, this is a thrilling and hilarious tale of rebellious adolescence as Huck, and later Tom Sawyer, free an already freed slave. Pathos and morality mixed with adventure and friendship.

I too am reading this classic for the first time before reading Percival Everett's, "James." I was quite intrigued when I read in the New York Times about how his novel is a new take on "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." I wanted to begin the new novel right away but felt it only fair and essential to read the original work first.

I must say that the dialect in this classic took me by surprise and I could only begin by reading aloud. That process increased my interest and the pain in my facial muscles as I was literally laughing so hard I could hardly read. I can't wait to see what they get up to next. So happy Mark Twain shared his gift with us. Enjoy!

I decided to read this after picking up James by Percival Everett. Though my experience in reading works like this is low, I enjoyed the journey! In life, there are going to be intense adventures and some that that are going to be slower. Huck and Jim’s journey made me appreciate this. If you are put off due to the dialects, please keep trying. The final adventure was endearing and made me chuckle out loud. Overall a great read!

At times, the story felt as if it had been written all in sequence, with little thought to what had come before or what might come next. It's simply written and somewhat enjoyable, but I wouldn't call it a must-read.
